The Internet is so wide open, people jump in without learning some of the basic rules. A really big problem is knowing what can be done with all the wonderful information so easily available. Once information or graphics are created and posted on the Internet, they are private property that is viewable by everyone. There is no application for copyright required - as of 1977, just creating this intellectual property constitutes copyrighting.
So, if you see/read something, don't assume it is public domain just because it is available to the public. Contact the owner/creator and ask permission to re-use their material. Maybe they will give you permission; maybe not. But your alternative is a lawsuit and hundreds of dollars.
Better safe than sorry.
